ehhhhh, it’s been a while! how are you? how was your trip?

Hi there.

To all the incredible young filmmakers, artists, performers, writers, thinkers and anti-libertarian shit-disturbers I met while I was in Orange County (Ana, Jackie, Claudia, Noah, Luis, Eleonora, Vassela, Kym, etc) - you’ve all kicked my ass and inspired me. Watch this space. Big things are coming.

I’m working out the kinks and bolts of a multi-part essay (i.e. I’m thinking I might begin writing it soon), but I’m starved for focus and time. To help make it seem as though I still update this thing every so often, here’s a copied-and-pasted section from a recent email (sorry Ry). Consider it a placeholder of sorts. I’ll be back.

hey man, i’m great! how are you?

i got back from Southern Cali last week, and it was an amazing trip. i’m in love with that entire strip of the Pacific, and if i take nothing else away with me following this experience, i at least know that i NEED to live by an ocean. lake ontario doesn’t quite cut it or me. i’ve lived (sort of) by the Atlantic, and that was really nice, but the Pacific has a whole other feel to it. i didn’t make it to San Francisco because i ran out of time, but i’m resolved to make another trip down there (maybe drive down along the coast from Vancouver?) and to park it in San Fran for at least a week or two. if i wasn’t such a socialist i’d probably move down there right now, but the politics, the politics.

tried getting in touch with Aceyalone, sent him messages to two different email addresses, but all my emails bounced back. problems with the web server. bullocks. tried to get into the Esthero show at Avalon on Hollywood and Vine, made it just in time for her last song, they wouldn’t let me in. met a Hells Angel dude from Edmonton outside the club, hopped in his car and made for the Viper Room on Sunset. it’s Johnny Depp’s club, and supposedly one of the jiggiest places you can go in LA, but that night there were a bunch of really dope Mexican heavy metal bands playing, and i had a wicked time. made friends with some of the band members, drove around South Central and Korea Town looking for a good burrito joint. found one. ate the most amazing burrito of my life.

spent lots of time in Orange County, which was different but all right. lots of antique shops, antique cars, wealthy folk. hung out in Newport Beach for my very first 4th of July, and it was like being at a giant outdoor frat party. stayed in Venice for a night, biked along the beach to Santa Monica. swam swam swam like i haven’t in years. took buses and subway trains all over town, made friends with other random travelers, got free tickets and day passes from the transit workers. spent too much time and money at Amoeba, found a really old Rio funky compilation i had been searching for for years. hung out in old Pasadena, beautiful. stayed at my boyfriend’s dad’s place in Altadena, just at the foot of the mountains, beautiful. drove around Inglewood, Crenshaw, Compton, went to In-and-Out Burger, had the best burger of my life. it pretty much looked like my neighbourhood in the West end: lots of auto body shops, fast food joints, etc.

anyway, i got back last week, and this is the most i’ve written about it so far. lightening struck at least a few dozen times while i was down there, and i’m still struggling to get all my ideas focused and onto paper right now. i’m taking the next few weeks just to write, and then i’m jumping back into 9-5 life. i need to get learn more html and friggen get my websites poppin already! that’s priority uno right now.

this email turned out longer than either one of us expected, i’m sure. i guess i hit some kind of nerve, got on a roll. oh well.

how’s the life?

xo
